Planning on doing the Ha Giang Loop without a guide?
Ha Giang, the most Northern Part of Vietnam with extraordinary landscapes and some of the most dangerous roads you will encounter. But don’t let that stop you! If you are confident when it comes to riding a motorbike then you should be fine. If you have little to no experience I suggest going with a guide.
Map your route out before you start. The route we did can be done backwards too. 3 nights 4 days, Lets Go!!
Day 1 – 143km
Everyone will start from one of the hotels/hostel in Ha Giang. We stayed at Kiki’s House, where we also rented out our motorbike and gear from. I’ll post another blog for breakdown of the cost. So, unfortunately for us it rained throughout the first day and our original plan was to stop of at all the view points. This would have taken some time and allowed us to complete 1/4 of the loop but because we did not make too many stops due to the bad weather it allowed us to get half of the loop done and we ended the day at Thài Tam Motel in Dông Văn.
Day 2 – 131km
Early rise to the day and we started with a breakfast Bánh mì and bought some drinks and snacks for the road. The sun was shining and the skies were blue, we headed off to the most Northern Part of Vietnam, where you can literally see China. To get there you will ride past the Vietnam/China Boarder. After that we rid 38km to the famous iconic Ma Pi Leng Pass and man was it beautiful, we had lunch at Tu San Coffee before heading to our final stop for the day, Du Gia Stream Lodge.
Day 3 – 76km
After a rested night we set off to Du Gia waterfall and it was so lovely but because we had a cloudy morning and a bit of rain which soon cleared up, we took the safe option and didn’t take a dip in the waterfall. The roads from this point on are for really experienced drivers. There was tons of construction work along the way. This last part of the loop there were a few view points and we passed through some local villages until we got to the last stop, Ha Giang Hostel.
Day 4 – (optional 48km)
Because of the bad weather we had on the first day we had missed out on some of the view points, we decided to redo the first quarter of the loop again and it was worth it. Plus Antonio loves to ride.
The Ha Giang Loop is a must do if your in Vietnam and you love nature, epic views & a challenge. Its filled with beautiful steep mountains and winding roads. This was our highlight of Vietnam.
