Wild Camping in Butteremere. We have never wild camped before so this was going to be the first time we spent the night out in the wilderness with no Wi-Fi or service on our phones. It’s an experience we can tick off our bucket list. Most people go camping with the basics but we did it the luxury way.
Location
After doing some research and watching tons of YouTube Videos we found out that it’s illegal to wild camp in England but we weren’t going to let that stop us. We found this beautiful spot in the Buttermere National Park where loads of people wild camp. After speaking to the park guard we were informed that people are allowed to camp high up in the mountains but it was a little too late when we found out this information. We had already set up camp near the crystal clear Buttermere Lake. This place was stunning, with miles of mountain views and fresh lake water. The best part about it was that there was no one around apart from us and some mountain sheep.
Food
Because this was our first time and we did not know what to expect and were over-packed with food. I had prepared some well-seasoned steak the night before and left this in the freezer for the next day. We had bought some packet rice that you simply boil in water and for breakfast we took eggs and beans. Bet you’re wondering how I managed to carry the eggs without breaking them? I bubble wrapped the eggs and popped them into the portable kettle. Not forgetting our snacks and beers, which we kept cool in the lake.
The Rules Of Wild Camping
There are not many rules to follow, it’s more about being respectful. If you are going to wild camp, always make sure to take all your rubbish away with you. There should be no sign that you were ever there. Respect the nature and the beauty of the place. Try to wild camp in a safe place and last but not least, enjoy yourself. It’s a unique experience.
Would We Do It Again?
We would definitely do it again and highly recommend wild camping in Buttermere, the only thing we would do differently is the time of year because it got quite cold during the evening. September is a beautiful month to be out in the lakes because the mountains have turned that amazing reddish autumn color. But it will be warmer during the months of July and August, so I guess it depends on if the weather matters to you.
