Sabah, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo, is a treasure trove of natural wonders. Embarking on a 6-day journey.
Day 1: Sepilok
Our first stop was the renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Nestled in the heart of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, this sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned and injured orangutans.
The day began with the mesmerizing sight of these magnificent creatures swinging from tree to tree. The center provides a safe haven for orangutans, allowing them to relearn essential survival skills before being released back into the wild. Witnessing their playful antics and observing the dedicated efforts of the sanctuary staff was a heartwarming experience, leaving us with a deep appreciation for wildlife conservation.
Days 2-4: Immersed in the Kinabatangan Rainforest Jungle
Leaving the orangutans behind, our journey continued to the Kinabatangan River, the longest river in Sabah. A meandering watercourse through the heart of Borneo’s rainforest, Kinabatangan is a haven for biodiversity. Our home for the next three days was a rustic lodge called Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort nestled on the riverbank, providing us with an immersive experience in the heart of nature.
Each day brought new adventures as we embarked on river cruises and jungle treks, guided by expert naturalists. The lush greenery echoed with the calls of exotic birds, and the riverbanks were alive with proboscis monkeys, and an array of colorful reptiles.
Days 5-6: Diving into the Depths of Mabul Island with Scuba Junkie
Leaving the rainforest behind, our next destination was Mabul Island, a paradise for divers and marine enthusiasts. Our stay with Scuba Junkie, a renowned dive resort, promised an unforgettable underwater experience. The journey began with a scenic boat ride, providing panoramic views of turquoise waters and distant islands.
Over the next two days, we explored the vibrant coral reefs surrounding Mabul and Kapalai Island. Scuba Junkie, with its experienced dive masters, ensured our safety as we descended into the crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. Six dives unveiled a kaleidoscope of colors, from schools of clownfish and swirling vortexes of eels, blue-spotted ribbon tail rays to the elusive green and hawksbill turtles gracefully navigating their underwater realm.
The evenings were spent at Scuba Junkie’s beachfront accommodation, sharing stories with fellow divers and relishing delicious local cuisine. Mabul Island, with its white sandy beaches and breathtaking sunsets, provided the perfect backdrop for unwinding after a day of underwater exploration.
As our 6-day adventure in Sabah, Borneo came to an end, we reflected on the diverse landscapes and ecosystems that make this region perfect for nature enthusiasts. From the playful orangutans in the rainforest to the vibrant coral gardens beneath the sea, Sabah offers a tapestry of experiences that will leave any traveler in awe of the wonders of Borneo.
